Hanes Tags: Dating Vintage Concert T-Shirt Blanks
How to date 70s–90s concert tees by the Hanes blank-mill collar — Fifty-Fifty, Beefy-T, Heavyweight, and Printables-era marks — then shop authenticated Hanes-tag shirts from our 577-piece catalog (403 available).
What Hanes was
Hanes is a blank mill — it made the cotton (and poly-cotton) shirts that printers and merch companies used — not a tour licensor like Brockum, Giant, or Winterland. The company traces to Shamrock Mills / Hanes Knitting; the collectible concert blank era really starts when Beefy-T lands in 1975 and Hanes Printables (~1980) focuses on screen-print stock.
Teaching point: a Hanes collar dates the cotton, not the tour license. Official 80s metal often reads “Brockum on Hanes” or “Screen Stars under a Brockum print.” Pair the blank brand with print copyright, stitch, and artwork era — tag alone is necessary, not sufficient. Use this leaf with the tags-by-decade guide and the authentication reference.
1970s–early 80s — Fifty-Fifty / early Beefy
Soft poly-cotton Fifty-Fifty marks and early Beefy-T woven labels dominate late-70s / early-80s concert stock. Blue-label and script-era variants show up in collector grids; there is no single “correct” 1979 Hanes photo. Read fabric hand, country line, and print aging together.

Mid–late 80s — Beefy-T / Heavyweight as tour default
Heavier 100% cotton Beefy-T and Heavyweight blanks become the metal and stadium workhorse under many Brockum print jobs (and some Winterland MCA-era hangtag years). A shirt can honestly be Brockum-licensed and Hanes-blanked at the same time — blank brand ≠ merch company.
Our Iron Maiden hub already teaches this lane: official 80s merch is often Screen Stars or Hanes blanks before Brockum / Giant take more of the 90s story. The live Aces High PDP chrome reads Tag: Hanes (pre-1990 era).

1990s — Heavy marks + dating traps
Hanes Heavy / Heavyweight families continue into the 90s. Logo refreshes lag real production years — a “1995-looking” Hanes mark is not proof of a 1995 print. Prefer event graphics, stitch, and print aging over logo folklore.
Single-stitch hems usually mean pre–mid/late-90s construction; double-stitch plus a modern Hanes care label on a claimed 1984 Eddie is a stop-sign. Soft note on Winterland: late-80s MCA hangtag years often rode Hanes Heavyweight blanks — a Hanes-only collar is not automatically “not Winterland” if the hangtag and print license agree. A Winterland timeline is coming when photo-reviewed stock supports it — plain text for now, no leaf URL.

Hanes vs Screen Stars vs Brockum / Giant
Rough defaults (not laws): Screen Stars sits in the Fruit of the Loom blank lane; Hanes is the Beefy-T / Fifty-Fifty / Heavyweight lane. Licensors: 1980s metal and stadium tours default to Brockum (often printed on Hanes or Screen Stars); from the early/mid-90s Giant dominates grunge and alternative and often names Anvil / Tee Jays / Tultex on the same collar. Overlap years exist — always read the actual tag.
Screen Stars and Fruit of the Loom leaves are coming when inventory supports shop modules — plain text for now, no leaf URLs. Full method tables live on authentication.html and the decade tag guide.
Fake and misread Hanes tells
- Modern soft-hand Hanes Essential / ComfortSoft on a claimed mid-80s tour shirt — wrong blank generation for money pages.
- Gildan (or other post-1998 blank) with a Hanes-looking ribbon — blank brand and claimed year must agree.
- Tag sewn over the collar binding rather than under / into the neck finish — a common bootleg shortcut.
- Double-stitch + late Made-in country (Honduras / Vietnam / etc.) on a shirt sold as 1982 metal — treat as modern unless print and construction prove otherwise.
- Treating any Hanes collar as proof of official merch without print copyright / license checks — lot tees and bootlegs also used Hanes blanks.
When in doubt, walk the full checklist on how we authenticate and how to authenticate vintage concert t-shirts. Tag is one pillar; stitch and print are the others.
Shop shirts with a Hanes tag
This is the wedge a photo timeline cannot copy: authenticated PDPs that already carry a
Hanes story. ID 19
(Motörhead — England Tour) is the live
API tag_brand=Hanes row (sold archive). IDs 354 and
475 are title-confirmed Hanes cards whose live PDP chrome already says
Tag: Hanes. ID 1
(Iron Maiden — Aces High) is the money
PDP whose chrome reads Tag: Hanes (pre-1990 era) even while the API field
is still Unknown — labeled honestly; not a text-safe catalog write from title alone.
